To be specific in language helps to be clear in your message or communication with others and that was part of Rolf’s podcast offer last week. I would really like to know how you’ve managed it and whether you may have exaggerated in asking specific questions so that others may have been even irritated by your precision. Well, the middle way is always best! And sometimes an imprecise language can be helpful and here we go…
Welcome to the Emotional Connectivity Podcast of Talent Management Academy!
Today we are talking about imprecise language. If you are wondering what I mean let me share this typical TV show setting where a journalist asks precise questions to a politician and the answer given means everything and anything… Bushwah – no thanks is what you are thinking and why ever it shall be of use to phrase in the less imprecise way? As a journalist expecting precision in the answer, “fluff talk” answers are not acceptable.
Let me give quite another example. At the end of the yoga session a so-called imaginary journey is announced for relaxation and you may listen to the following: “Imagine you are on an island in the sea, really the location of your dreams to relax… you see the whitecaps and feel the warm sand… and you can easily relax and take a deep breath.” This is very precise giving you pictures that may not be yours. You really make an effort to get to this island and you recognize that you start to you’re your temper more and more because you cannot make it on this day. Your thoughts are circling around this one question why ever do I have these thoughts in mind at the moment I don’t actually want them?
Imprecise language is a skill to stay fuzzy and thus giving space for developing individual internal pictures. The process is done stepwise directing the focus of attention from externally to internally. Here we go and just try it – feel comfortable and just wait and see.
Just perceive how you are sitting now, how your posture is at present and take a deep breath in and out. And while you are listening to my voice your calm breath makes you more and more relaxed. You may ask yourself what happens next… and you may let go anything more and more… and you are increasingly curious which part of your body is coming into relaxation next. You feel good… You are naturally breathing in and out and while my voice is constantly fading out, you feel light as a feather and you recall a happy moment of excellence in your life… yes indeed… right… take your time…
How was this short lead into imagination? Did you recognize the difference compared to the island in the sea? Imprecise language is always important in case you would like to activate resources through conscious relaxation processes so that creativity may flow. Take the chance to go to your individual place of wellbeing so that you can easily be re-energized once a day! Take a break and have a try!
