Rolf told you in his last week’s Podcast about misunderstandings and what kind of words in our communication is particularly susceptible to provoke ambiguities.
“Say what you want clearly and directly“
- 1st example: Job application. “I would be more than glad if you considered me to be granted the opportunity of presenting me personally in your company.” What do you mean – would you or are you going to looking forward to this meeting? How does this sentence sound? And if you were the person providing a vacancy, how would you react?
- 2nd example: Negative feedback. Manager to staff: “You are definitely very anxious to meet the demanding requirements. Really, I think that is worth to be mentioned…BREAK… but – by some means or other – there is something not working at its optimum… Huh? Imagine you would be the counterpart – what’s the message here? And how do you behave then?
- 3rd example: Relationship routine. “It might have been cleaned up and additionally there are some ingredients missing for preparing the meal.“ In the back of one’s mind and not said – it’s always me cooking, planning the shopping and even cleaning up the kitchen afterwards. You could at least show some initiative…
What are your experiences? Why do we often have difficulties to pronounce directly and clearly what is going on in us or what we are expecting? And how could this be related to our self?
Observe and listen exactly – when do you come to the point in a conversation that this idea comes to your mind saying “You won’t better say that now” and what is hindering you in that moment?
By the way: Be always clear what motivates you. Ask yourself at first what outcome you want to achieve.
It’s more than useful to make I-statements and give specific examples. Of course, always with appreciation and respect because everybody loves to save face.
And above all don’t forget to focus on the essential and be aware of your self.
By saying what you want clearly and directly others can easily recognize your personal attitude that makes you unique as personality.
