In last week’s podcast Rolf talked about the EGO, how it could show up and what kind of impact it might have. Today’s topic is about body signals and my first question to you is “what does it mean to you?“ Body language, early warning system, somatic awareness, maybe also how to interpret body signals?
Making contexts clear is the first step. How do you perceive your body, for example if you are stressed? And how does it feel if you are worried? Try out a body scan in these moments by taking a deep dive into your body awareness. Where exactly do you feel what and how intensely? Make use of a scale starting from 0 to -10 in terms of negative feelings. Most of the time we simply take our body and behave, act and react in word and deed. Have you ever tried – being confident of victory – to feel blue by throwing up your arms? It’s not working, isn’t it?!
Our posture and our world of emotions are closely linked with each other. Body language indicates what kind of emotion affects us. As a participant in a discussion you get a strange feeling indeed, if your counterpart makes a verbal statement that doesn’t fit to the body signal you perceive. Then we are talking of incongruence which means that the message conveyed by body language is not congruent with the verbal message.
Observe and be mindful of yourself during this week. What emotions are triggered when experiencing yourself and others in an incongruent way? What do you do then?
Here is my tip: Take care of your defense mechanism for emotions and what kind of body awareness is linked to it. Practice to be self-conscious and go on asking yourself what context you are in with others. Give your best attention to your relationships and show sincere interest. Make yourself aware of the body language signals conveyed and check out whether you are authentic that way. ‘Cause YOU are unique as personality!
